I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of Your Lordship's telegrams of the 5th, and 12th. Go 5-351

1535119 1535/March in which you granted permission to me and to Mr. A. G.

M. Fletcher to draw the full pay of the posts of Governor and Colonial Secretary respectively with effect from the 1st.

March until the date when Mr. Stubbs leaves England. I am

vary grateful to Your Lordship for this concession, and Mr. Fletcher has asked me to express his thanks also.

I may refer in this connection to Mr. --- Long's Confidential Despatch of the 22nd. November with which was transmitted a copy of a telegram addressed through the Governor-General of Canada to Sir Henry May, granting him such leave as might be necessary, with full pay for a period not exceeding three months in all and half pay for the remainder. Sir Henry May left the Colony on the 11th. September and he has draw through the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corpora- -tion in this Colony full pay from that date up to the 3rd. November, and half pay from the 4th. November to the 28th. February. During the latter period half pay has been drawn in the ordinary course by myself, by the Acting Colonial Secretary, and by the Acting Assistant Colonial Secretary.

Your Lordship will no doubt instruct the Crown Agents as to any further payment to be made to Sir Henry May. Money is available both in 1918 and in 1919, as
